Guwahati: A top Maoist leader from Jharkhand, Anand Kharwar alias Anandji was arrested by Assam Police on Thursday from a lodge at Tezpur town in North Assam where he had arrived from Kolkata via Guwahati on Wednesday night.
A senior police official in Tezpur informed that Anandji is the ‘self-styled’ zonal commander of Maoist command of three districts – Latehar, Garwa and Palamau – that comprise the ‘Koel-Chank’ zone in Jharkhand. He was carrying a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs for several months now. There were 18 cases registered against him in Jharkhand.
Kharwar was picked up at around 11 am on Thursday from Jironi Lodge located near the main police station in Tezpur town.
He had arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday evening from Kolkata by train and traveled to Tezpur by road.
He arrested after police got suspicious after finding an inmate from Jharkhand in the lodge’s guest list during routine check.
His identity was confirmed by Tezpur Police with their Jharkhand counterparts. Tezpur police later handed over the Maoist leader to the Special Operations Unit of the Assam Police in Guwahati.
