TURA: East Garo Hills Police have made a breakthrough in investigations connecting the ANVC-B militants with the attack on former minister Deborah C Marak following the arrest of seven members of the outfit who were directly involved in the incident.
The seven member gang of ANVC-B militants who orchestrated the attack were caught while travelling from North Garo Hills to East Garo Hills district at Rongjeng area on Thursday afternoon.
The militants revealed to police that they were compelled to attack Deborah Marak because of the instructions given by their ‘chairman’ Rimpu Marak who wanted the former minister to accept their demands and agree to their cause by signing an agreement, something the politician was reluctant.
The militants from the group had warned that she would no longer be allowed to campaign in the rural areas unless their demands were met.
All seven ultras, including their action commander Sinbirth N Marak alias Tengton and Norok (hell) of Sampalgre village, were arrested from the Tata Sumo at Rongjeng area.
The militants reportedly entered the village as part of a soccer frenzy entourage ahead of the arrival of the former Deputy Chief Minister.
The militants concealed themselves as football supporters and joined the group that arrived with the team from Darang Boldak of South Garo Hills which was to play the final match on that day where the former minister was the chief guest.
The militants kept themselves concealed inside a school building in the village waiting for the former minister and when she arrived they emerged and opened fire in the air causing a huge commotion as people ran for cover to escape the militants anger.
