JOWAI: The staff of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) called off its indefinite strike following an assurance from the authorities that their dues would be cleared on or before December 19.

Due to acute financial crisis, the JHADC has not been able to pay salary to its staff on time which forced the employees under the banner of the JHADC Staff Association to start an indefinite strike from Monday.

The salary for the month of September and October was paid in November whereas the salary of its employees for the month of November and December is yet to be paid.

“We have decided to temporarily call off our indefinite strike after the assurance. If the Executive Committee fails fulfill its promise, we will continue the same after December 19,” one of the JHADC Staff Association leaders said.

According to sources, the JHADC is planning to divert the fund meant for pensioners to the District Council fund for payment of salary.

The diverted amount will be refunded immediately when the financial position of the council becomes better again, sources added.
