SHILLONG: Concerned over the repeated assaults and threats on doctors from time to time especially in Garo Hills, the Meghalaya Medical Services Association (MMSA) on Wednesday asked the government to provide adequate security to all doctors and staffs posted in sensitive areas.

In a memorandum submitted to the Commissioner and Secretary in charge of Health and Family Welfare, MMSA general secretary Dr Aman Warr said the fact that there is a recurrence of assault on the doctors and other medical staff especially in Garo Hills proves that there is complete breakdown of law and order in the region.

“Outlaws, dacoits, robbers and criminals are running the roost,” he added.

The memorandum comes following the recent case where a group of miscreants assaulted and looted Dr Apchan Sangma, a resident doctor of Mahendraganj Community Health Centre.

Dr Warr also mentioned that time and again, the MMSA had requested the government to provide security to the doctors and staff posted in sensitive areas but it has failed to do so.

The state executive committee of MMSA will meet on December 22 to decide on the next course of action if there is no positive action from the government by then, Dr Warr said, adding that the MMSA will go on an indefinite strike if police fail to take action against the miscreants involved in the assault case.
