SHILLONG: In what can be considered as a major jolt for the UDP, the party’s central committee member SD Khongwir has decided to support sitting Mawlai legislator Founder S Cajee in the upcoming 2013 assembly election.
The former minister made the announcement while addressing a gathering at Mawlai on Friday.
The statement from the senior UDP leader would be a major cause of worry in the party camp which is fielding sitting MDC Embhah Syiemlieh from Mawlai.
Khongwir, however, clarified that he would only support the candidate (Cajee) and not the Congress party.
“I am supporting FS Cajee as he is working hard for the constituency,” he said.
Khongwir also acknowledged that his decision to support Cajee might hamper the UDP candidate’s prospects.
It may be reminded that the senior UDP leader had openly campaigned for Cajee in the 2008 Assembly elections, prompting his party to term his coalition with the Congress candidate as a ‘mistake’.
