Cong ticket aspirants wait with anxiety

New Delhi: Having spent a Christmas marked by anxiety over their names figuring in the list of contestants for the forthcoming Assembly polls, Congress ticket aspirants will have to wait a few more days.

With the first list of candidates not likely to be announced by Congress before the second week of January, the politicians have no option but to wait and watch with their fingers crossed.

The first formal meeting of the screening committee of the party will be held here on Friday. All the five members of the committee including the chairperson Mrs Ambika Soni will attend the meeting, AICC sources said here on Friday.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders from both the AICC as well as the MPCC including Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and MPCC President D D Lapang met here on Friday for an informal discussion.

The meeting, which took place at the headquarters of the AICC, was also attended Mrs Soni. Ahmed Patel, Political Secretary to Mrs Sonia Gandhi and some other leaders also joined the meeting.

The former Union Minister, Vincent H Pala, general secretary in-charge of Meghalaya Dr Dhaniram Shandil and Secretary Sanjay Bapna also took part in the informal meeting.

P C Chakoo, another member of the committee, however, could not attend the meeting since he was away in his home state Kerala.
