Guwahati: The Asian Centre for Human Rights in an appeal to the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Saturday called for declaration of December 29 as the “National Day for Protesting Violence Against Women” and announcement of a national award in the name of the Delhi gang-rape victim who died in a Singapore hos[pital on Saturday.
“No other incident has either evoked or shaken the conscience of the nation as this particular one has. While a number of actions will be recommended by the Justice JS Verma Committee and Justice Usha Mehra Committee, the Declaration of December 29 as the ‘National Day for Protesting Violence Against Women’ and a national award in the name of the victim will remind the Indian nation about the urgent need to address violence against women,” said Suhas Chakma, Director of the Asian Centre for Human Rights.
Meanwhile, people took part in various silent protests across the city to show solidarity to the 23-year-old medical student whose death shocked the nation.
