SHILLONG: The date for the Assembly election in Meghalaya is likely to be announced on Friday.
According to an official source, the Election Commission of India may declare the dates for the Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland Assembly elections on Friday in the aftermath of the recent meetings held with the state election machineries.
As per indications, the election in Meghalaya is likely to be held on or after February 20.
The Election Commission wants to complete the election process in Meghalaya and the other two Northeast states within February, the official added.
The Ministers now are in a hurry to finish off the inauguration of many Government schemes at the earliest as once the election date is announced, the model code of conduct will come into force immediately.
Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh will inaugurate the Shallang Police Station in West Khasi Hills on Friday morning.
Once the code of conduct is operational, only the ongoing schemes will be allowed to be implemented and there would be a bar on inaugurations or announcement of new projects.
