TURA: Members of the Garo Hills Civil Society, which includes leaders of several student and social bodies, have written to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, calling for stringent action against those involved in the gang rape of a teenager in Williamnagar last December.
Cautioning against delay in the justice for the victim, the leaders of the civil society have demanded that the case be immediately shifted to a fast-track court and the guilty punished.
After a recent meeting among the members of the civil society, it was agreed upon that a petition would be made to the government to ensure the culprits are not released on bail until they complete the mandatory period and investigation of the case should be expedited so that the guilty do not go scot free. They have also demanded punishment for the juveniles involved in the crime.
The society members are also seeking that necessary assistance or package should be provided to the victim as and when required by the victim.
They are also calling for a rehabilitation home for such victims be provided by the government and a police booth installed in Williamnagar civil hospital and other government run health institutions.
The other decisions taken by the civil society leaders at their meet was for establishment of a state-of-the-art Medical Forensic Laboratory with enhanced facilities, establishment of more fast-track courts in East Garo Hills district.
The NGOs also pointed out the need for doctors and police personnel to be sensitized in handling rape cases so that evidences are not lost and appropriate and immediate care is given to the traumatized victim.
