SHILLONG: Categorically denying that he had submitted tampered documents relating to the KHNAM-UDP merger to the Election Commission (EC), UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday maintained that the whole process had been a transparent affair.

“KHNAM was dissolved during the general council meeting attended by the anti-merger group led by Pyndapborthiaw Saiborne. They had staged a walkout at the last minute after seeing that majority of the people attending meeting voted in favour of the dissolution of KHNAM to pave way for the merger,” Lyngdoh said while adding that members of the press fraternity were also allowed to witness the proceedings of the meeting.

According to Lyngdoh, the decision to hold the general council meet was taken by the Central Executive Committee (CEC).

“Saiborne had himself signed the notice for convening the general council,” he said. On allegations of submitting a tampered document, Lyngdoh said that since the whole proceeding was recorded in writing there might be possibilities of some overwriting cropping up.

“We would be approaching the EC to clarify on our points at an appropriate time. This would be done in a transparent manner,” Lyngdoh said, adding, “The survival of a party would depend on the people. We would all seek a fresh mandate from the people during the upcoming Assembly election.”
