SHILLONG: There is a lull in law and order problems related to militancy in Garo Hills for the last two weeks.
Since the killing of two GNLA cadres in the first week of January and the recent signing of the draft peace agreement with the ANVC, there has been no major violent activities initiated by the GNLA in Garo Hills.
However, the security forces are continuing their operations against the militants.
On January 6 at around 2 am, an encounter took place between the GNLA and security forces at Mindikgre village in South Garo Hills resulting in killing of a GNLA cadre identified as Jona Marak. One hand grenade was also recovered from the place of occurrence.
The next day, an area commander of GNLA identified as Gojol Sangma was killed in an encounter with security forces at Garakgre village in West Garo Hills. A pistol and ammunition was also recovered.
Earlier, on January 3 night police arrested two GNLA over ground workers from Sambalgre village in West Garo Hills. They were allegedly providing shelter and passing information to GNLA about the movement of security forces.
An election official said on Thursday that since the militant outfits from Garo Hills have not called any boycott of elections, there would not be any disruption to the election process.
