Land acquisition plan faces election hurdle

SHILLONG: Acquisition of the 200 acres of land at Umran Diary in Ri-Bhoi district for setting up of the headquarter of the Meghalaya Police 6th Battalion has been delayed on account of the upcoming Assembly election.
“We would have been able to acquire the land if not for the Assembly election,” Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep informed here on Monday.
The Deputy Commissioner, however, informed that he would discuss with the Government on the possibility of proceeding ahead with the land acquisition process despite the announcement of the election date.
A senior official from the Home (Police) department, when contacted, said that he does not think there would be any problem in proceeding with the land acquisition.
“We can always place the matter before Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Prashant Naik for the necessary clearance since this land acquisition process is not a new initiative,” the official added.
At present, personnel of the Sixth Battalion are being housed at the MLP 1st Battalion headquarters at Mawlai Mawiong.
