SHILLONG: The State will get its first lot of paramilitary forces by February 8 for the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled on February 23.
Talking to media persons here on Friday, Chief Secretary WMS Pariat said that the State Government recently held a video conferencing with the officials of the Home Ministry and the Election Commission on the law and order situation of the State in view of the election.
The State Government has asked the Central Government to deploy the paramilitary forces much earlier than what have been decided by the Central officials.
“We have asked them to send the forces at the earliest and the matter is being examined by them,” Pariat said.
The Chief Secretary also informed that the State Government has sought for 73 companies of paramilitary forces to ensure a free and fair election.
Pariat also asserted that the first lot of forces would be deployed in Garo Hills keeping in view the sensitivity of the region.
It may be mentioned that almost half of the polling stations in the State (1222 out of 2485) have been categorised as either sensitive or hyper sensitive.
