SHILLONG: The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) on Saturday alleged that Laitumkhrah MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh was violating the election model code of conduct as two MLA schemes are being implemented in the constituency despite the announcement of the election date.
In a press release issued here on Saturday, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing claimed that the ongoing construction of footpaths at Demseiniong and Nongrimmaw, Laitumkhrah was in violation of the code of conduct.
“The construction is below standard and the footpath at Demseiniong is being constructed right on the edge of a steep area which could collapse anytime putting the commuters in danger,” Kharshiing said.
The CSWO will take up the matter with engineers from the Shillong Municipal Board and ask them to physically check the construction work for any discrepancies.
The CSWO president further stated that most works related to Nongrimmaw have been proposed much earlier by the village headmen but were lying in cold storage since 2011.
“The way schemes are being sanctioned clearly indicates that it is aimed at getting votes,” Kharshiing said.
The CSWO urged the headmen of the various localities and villages to report any sub standard construction under the MLA schemes since the payment is made out of public fund.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Sanjay Goyal, meanwhile, said that the matter has not come to his notice as yet.
“We will enquire into the matter and if there is a violation of the model code of conduct then we will take action,” Goyal added.
