SHILLONG: A request by the minister in-charge elections, J A Lyngdoh to a friend not to campaign in the name of religion in his constituency has landed the minister in trouble.

One Probingstar Syiemlieh of Pyndenglitha Nongspung , East Khasi Hills lodged a complaint at Laban police station that “on January 14 around 8.45 pm, he received a call from a caller claiming himself to be J.A. Lyngdoh, sitting MLA of Nongspung and threatened him not to campaign for any other party in the ensuing Assembly elections”.

When contacted, Lyngdoh said that Syiemlieh happened to be his good friend and what he told him over the phone was that Syiemlieh should not campaign for any candidate in the name of any religion.

“I told him that if he does not want to support me , he can do so , but he should not ago around and campaign in the constituency by taking the name of any religion,” the minister said adding that he cannot tell anyone not to campaign for any other political party.

“As minister in charge of elections, I am aware of the rules”, Lyngdoh added.

However, police said that since the aggrieved person lodged a complaint, the matter will be investigated to ascertain the truth.
