NONGSTOIN: A crowd of over 2000 people manhandled police personnel and damaged their vehicles after a police Sub-Inspector allegedly assaulted a truck driver here on Friday.

The trucker, Wallambok Kurbah from Nongkhliaw village, was on his way to Nongstoin after loading coal from Nongpyndeng depot. When the truck reached a petrol pump near Rani Motors the Sub-Inspector, R Sten, stopped Kurbah and allegedly began beating him for unknown reasons.

People who were nearby tried to stop the police personnel but to no avail even as two more policemen arrived at the scene.

Angry by-standers first rushed the truck driver to a hospital and then blocked the road for five hours.

ADC J Lakiang, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) MB Tongper, ASP GD Kharwanlang and DSP G Chacko arrived at the spot to take stock of the situation but by then the angry mob had begun damaging police vehicles and manhandling the officials and police personnel present at the spot. Additional forces had to be summoned to control the over 2000-strong crowd even as the officials and police personnel sought cover from stones pelted by the mob.

The situation was later brought under control by the police led by Kharwanlang.

No arrests have been made so far.

Sources say that this was not the first instance of Sten’s highhandedness and local cabbies have always been victims of his ill temper.
