SHILLONG: Congress candidate from Nongkrem constituency, Lambor Malngiang, on Thursday said he would leave it to the people of the constituency to judge for themselves the performance of sitting legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit in the past five years.

“It would not be right on my part to judge anybody’s performance. We would know whether the people of the constituency are happy or unhappy with the performance of the sitting legislator on the day of counting,” Malngiang told reporters after filing his nomination papers here.

Stating that Nongkrem constituency was beset with lot of problems like poor road communication and lack of effective health care facilities, Malngiang said, “The constituency has a thousands of underprivileged families and my main goal would be the uplift of these families.”

Explaining his decision to contest from the Congress party, Malngiang said it would be extremely difficult to get hold of various Centrally-sponsored schemes if one is with the regional forces.

“My decision to contest from the Congress would provide me an opportunity to get access to the various Central schemes for development of the Constituency since there is Congress-led Government at the Centre,” he added.

When reminded that the people of Nongkrem have never voted any candidate twice as MLA, Malngiang, exuded confidence, saying, “In 2009 I created history by winning the MDC election for the second time. I am confident of rewriting history by becoming the first legislator to represent Nongkrem constituency on two occasions.”

It may be reminded that Malngiang had represented Nongkrem constituency as a legislator in 2003-08 as a KHNAM candidate and has also been elected MDC in 2004 and 2009.
