SHILLONG: The State police have launched a massive combing operation in East Garo Hills district to arrest the militants who gunned down two jail staffers on Saturday even as the district administration will order a magisterial inquiry into the incident on Monday.
The State DGP Kulbir Krishan on Sunday said that the investigation was going on into the Saturday incident “even as the police got certain leads and were working on them.”
Talking to The Shillong Times here, the DGP said that the investigation would only confirm whether the attack was carried out by ANVC-B or GNLA.
The state police has recovered empty cartridges of AK Machine guns,9mm pistols and Chinese pistols.
It is learnt that the militants first entered the jail premises through a small gate and proceeded to the office of the two jail staff where the militants dragged Warjri and Thabah out of the office and shot them near the gate.
According to DGP, families of the duo would be paid ex-gratia and compensation.
The police chief also informed that a team of COBRA and SWAT have already been pressed into counter-insurgency operations soon after the incident. Meanwhile, Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh has condemned the incident.
UNI adds: East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mantri said a magisterial inquiry would be ordered to probe into the killing of the two jail staffers.
“I will officially issue the order for a magisterial inquiry tomorrow to probe into the entire incident,” Mantri said.
