SHILLONG: A fierce gunbattle broke out between SWAT and COBRA commandos and GNLA militants at Bolchugre village in Songsak on Wednesday morning.

JFK Marak, SP, East Garo Hills on Wednesday said that the gunfight erupted after the sentry of the GNLA militants, who were camping in a house, first spotted the police team and fired upon the special squad of the SWAT and COBRA commandos. This forced the security personnel to retaliate.

However, the militants managed to flee taking advantage of the thick forest and there was no report of any casualty.

It may be mentioned that the combing operations against militants have been intensified after the recent attack on Williamnagar jail which left two jail staff dead.

The district administration of East Garo Hills has intensified patrolling to thwart any attempt to disrupt peace by any militant group.
