SHILLONG: Just weeks before the State goes to polls, UDP candidate from Mairang constituency Metbah Lyngdoh finds himself in trouble following exposure of his alleged involvement in misappropriation of public money amounting to the tune of Rs 1 crore. Information was gathered through a RTI filed by a Mairangbah resident, Mack Donald Nongrang, in December last. Disclosing the findings, Nongrang on Thursday said that the RTI was filed following complaints from several people, who expressed disappointment over the implementation of the Special Rural Works Programme (SRWP) and Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) schemes for 2008-2013.

“The finding of the RTI speaks for itself,” Nongrang said.

“The poor and the deserving beneficiaries have been deprived and deceived as the list consist names of people from a few well-to-do families”, Nongrang said adding that even after the completion of the construction work, a huge number of people were yet to receive the second installment.

As per the RTI findings, during the year 2009-2010, the MLA had sanctioned Rs 10,000 under SRWP and Rs 30,000 for construction of low cost housing to 300 out of 304 beneficiaries. Similarly, the list of a total of 300 beneficiaries of SRWP was submitted by the MLA to BDO of Mairang during the year 2011-2012. However, a total of 54 beneficiaries have been recommended for the implementation of IAY scheme during 2010- 2011.

Demanding the MLA to come clean on the allegation, Nongrang threatened, “If the MLA does not pay any heed to the demand, I will take it to higher authorities.”
