New excise tax hits coal export

SHILLONG: The export of coal to Bangladesh from various land customs stations in the State was hit hard by the imposition of 1 percent central excise tax on coal. There are land customs stations in West Khasi Hills, Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills which have stopped export of coal. Exporters said that since October 2012, the Customs and Exporters said that since October 2012, the Customs and Central Excise had issued notice that one percent excise tax would be levied on exported coal and the exporters had been asked to register with the Customs office, Shillong to facilitate tax collection.

According to sources, trade was stopped recently after the exporters refused to register with the Customs, Shillong.

An official with the Customs, here confirmed the development and added that 1 percent central excise tax of ad valorem on coal was imposed, while adding that it was mandatory.
