SHILLONG: Congress MP Priya Dutt, who was on a visit to the city, on Saturday urged the youth to play a more pro-active role in the electoral process.

Impressed with the decent number of young voters in the State, the Congress MP from Mumbai North West constituency said youth play the most important role in bringing about change and the rising number of young members in the Congress indicated that the party is keen to bring about a change in the system.

“Only enrolment is not enough but active participation in the voting is of utmost importance,” the daughter of Bollywood actor Sunil Dutt added.

Stating that only the Congress can provide a stable government to the people, Dutt said for the past few years, the Congress has been successful in bringing the much-needed change as envisaged by the people.

The Congress MP, however, admitted that the trend of political instability in the State was due to infighting within the ruling party or a coalition government.

“Infighting within the party is to some extent responsible for change in government. However, things are moving in the right perspective now,” she said while adding that only people can change the system.

Commenting on the minimal number of women candidates contesting for the upcoming election in matrilineal Meghalaya, Dutt said, “Politics is still a kind of enigma for many women.”

“Though the transition is going to take time, yet, it is seen that this perception is slowly starting to wear off,” she added.

Maintaining that the Congress’s main focus is on development and inclusive growth, Dutt said the party is good at balancing between different sections of the society and would continue the good work.
