SHILLONG: Predicting defeat of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma in the February 23 hustings, NPP leader Conrad K Sangma said internal bickering will bring downfall of Congress.

Addressing an election rally at Mawkhar, Conrad said that a change will be there in many constituencies in Garo Hills where Congress seats will be significantly reduced to the minimum due to the ongoing internal bickering.

Mawkhar falls under North Shillong constituency from where the party has fielded Prof PM Passah.

“In the last election Dr Sangma did not win with big margin and this time he is facing difficulty,” Conrad said.

He also ridiculed the Chief Minister by saying that under his leadership, only two sectors have developed — foundation stone laying sector and catering sector.

“With every foundation stone laying ceremony, there was a tea party”, Conrad said.

According to Conrad, the period of Mukul Sangma can be described as stone-age as he was busy laying as many as 300 foundation stones.

He said the Congress-led Government could not fulfill its commitments as even after a foundation stone was laid at Police Bazar for its beatification, two years have gone and the work is in limbo.

He also said that it was NPP legislators who were always with the people at the time of any trouble whether it is related to the border incidents at Langpih, Muktapur or Khanduli among others.

The NPP leader further said that the Congress led Government hurriedly passed an ineffective Lokayukta Bill without even discussing it.

Conrad also criticized the Government for not having a longer Assembly session.

NPP state president WR Kharlukhi said the people and political parties should unite against the Congress-led Government as it was the Congress which prevented a person from Meghalaya to become the President of India.

Kharlukhi was referring to the candidature of NPP leader PA Sangma during the presidential election in July last year.

Addressing another election rally at Mawkyrwat, Conrad said that majority of the MLA have failed people’s issues in the Assembly.

“They (MLAs) never uttered even a single word on the issues affecting the common people in the Assembly. This has dented the image of the State,” Sangma said.

The NPP has fielded Renikton Lyngdoh from Mawkyrwat.

The NPP blamed Deputy Chief Minister and Congress candidate Rowell Lyngdoh for the lack of development in Mawkyrwat constituency.

“Despite representing the constituency for the past many years, he (Lyngdoh) has failed to bring any development to the constituency,” the NPP leader said.

While criticizing the Congress party for taking the claim for the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road project, he said that this project materialized only because of the efforts of the previous MPA Government under the leadership of Dr Donkupar Roy.

Urging the people of the State not to vote for Congress, the NPP leader from West Khasi Hills Nicolas Marwein said there would be instability if the Congress is voted to power “since they will continuous tussle over party leadership which the people have experienced in the past.”

Meanwhile, NPP candidate from Mawkyrwat Renikton Lyngdoh said that if he is elected, he would try to implement the various schemes in a transparent manner.
