Mumbai: West Indies emerged as one of the leading title contenders after thrashing New Zealand by 48 runs in their second Super Six stage match of the ICC Women’s World Cup here on Monday.
After three losses and one no result in their previous four clashes against New Zealand, the Windies pulled off a comprehensive victory after bowling out their opponents for 159 in 44.3 overs.
New Zealand, who had opted to bat second, started their run chase of 208 with a stutter, as they lost three wickets within 10 overs for only 47 runs.
West Indies pacer Tremanye Smartt’s devastating first spell of 3-26 in seven overs was the main reason behind New Zealand’s poor start.
The Windies struggled in their innings, too, until a 45-run partnership for the ninth wicket got the score to 207-9. (PTI)
