SHILLONG: As the election campaign in Meghalaya picks up steam, top Congress leaders are all set to make a beeline to the hill state where polling will be held on February 23.

The AICC general secretary in charge Meghalaya Mukul Wasnik, who has been in the State for the last few days, on Wednesday said that the party is expecting to have at least 40 central leaders and star campaigners campaigning in the coming ten days.

He informed that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, AICC president Sonia Gandhi and AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi have already confirmed their visits.

“Our central leaders would campaign in the entire State,” Wasnik said.

According to him, the Prime Minister will address a gathering at Polo on February 15.

The MPCC president DD Lapang, however, said that the timing of Dr Singh’s visit is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, the venues of Mrs Gandhi’s meetings in Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills are yet to be finalized, Wasnik said.

Similarly, venues of Rahul Gandhi’s meetings at Nongpoh, Nongstoin and Williamnagar have also not been finalized.

Bollywood stars Raj Babbar and Nagma would also campaign in the State along with former cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin.

Union Defense Minister AK Antony and his deputy Jitendra Singh are also expected to campaign in the State.
