SHILLONG: Shillong has been put on security alert ahead of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit on Friday.

Dr Singh will address a Congress election rally at 5th ground of JN Sports Complex here on Friday morning. The Prime Minister is expected to speak at least 30 minutes on the various measures being implemented by the party for the overall improvement in the life of common man.

Besides the AICC leaders, the Chief Minister, MPCC chief , senior leaders and Congress candidates will be present on the occasion.

Low-key campaign: Meanwhile, with just a week left for campaigning for the February 23 Assembly elections to end, there is not much fanfare this time around till date.

Some candidates have cited the implementation of model code of conduct as the reason for the low key campaign.

Moreover, some candidates have preferred door-to-door campaign considering the less number of voters in the constituencies.

The candidates consider street corner meetings and large public meetings will not have that impact compared to the personal meeting with the voters.

However, lack of relevant issues appears to be another reason behind the slow pace of the campaigns.

As many as 345 candidates are in the fray for the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.
