SHILLONG: BJP mahila morcha national president Smriti Irani on Sunday said development of the State was the key to solving the problem of insurgency in Garo Hills and Meghalaya as a whole.

Irani was scheduled to address a public rally at Jhalupara, but the same was cancelled due to rain.

Later, while addressing media persons, she said that the situation of insurgency has arisen due to poor development and infrastructure in the State.

“When people are not provided with proper roads, water, electricity and other basic needs, anti-social elements have every possibility to lure the youths into their traps,” she said.

Stating that stability is a key factor for development, she pointed out that BJP-ruled Gujarat led by Narendra Modi has developed because of stability in the party.

According to Irani, Meghalaya has tremendous potential for tourism but the State is not yet properly connected.

“Even the IT sector is not developed. People till date do not have bijli, sadak and paani (electricity, road and water),” she said.

Reacting to a query, she said that BJP is continuously strengthening its party base in Meghalaya and other states of the North East.

She also claimed that the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) was given to the State under the rule of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. She also took a dig at the Congress for the various scams that have been unearthed in the last few years.

“Instead of dedicating itself to the people, the Congress is dedicating itself to scams,” she said.
