Poll violence continues in N’land

Kohima: Panic was created Sunday morning when some unidentified miscreants burst some fire crackers in Tyui Assembly Constituency (A/C) under Wokha district, while the supporters of a rival party have damaged the vehicle of former Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker and Congress candidate of Wokha A/C, E T Ezung at the Forest Colony of Wokha town.

Wokha Superintendent of Police Limasunep Jamir told UNI over phone that some miscreants burst fire crackers in Sukitong colony of Tyui town Sunday morning, which created panic and people started running for shelter mistaking that of gun firing.

A platoon of CRPF has been deployed in the Tyui town for maintaining peace and tranquility. He also informed that a mob of around 30 to 40 people vandalised and damaged E T Ezung’s vehicle on Saturday, but the candidate escaped unhurt. In this connection, a case has been registered based on ‘vandalism, mischief and unlawful assembly’ under IPC, however police have not received reports of any injury during the incident, Mr Limasunup said.

Poll-related tension gripped Dimapur town last evening, when ‘about to fight’ situation was created among supporters of two rival parties in Lengrijan area, under Dimapur-II A/C.

Sources said a huge number of Congress and NPF supporters came to a near stand-off, but the situation was brought under control with the timely intervention of police and colony elders.

It was reported that the incident occurred when some youth of a rival party brought down posters and flags of another party in Lengrijan area. As the information spread, the agitated supporters of the other party gathered at the spot on receiving information of the tension in that area. Police personnel rushed to the spot and dispersed the agitated youths from both the parties. Police personnel were deputed in the area till late evening, sources said..

In the ‘sensitive district’ of Mokokchung, at least 62 people have been arrested throughout the district from several places in the past 48 hours on different charges. On Friday, police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition along with explosives after they raided the house of one person in Molungkimong village and altogether 54 people have been arrested in this connection.

In Tuli, four people were arrested for non-compliance to the order of Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung to surrender their weapons. In Longmisa village, at least 3 people were arrested on charges of attacking a youth of Independent candidate and torching a vehicle on Saturday. (UNI)
