SHILLONG: The rain gods on Sunday played spoil sport as many election rallies had to be either curtailed or cancelled.

As rain poured throughout the day the mercury dipped below normal which led many people to stay indoors resulting in cancellation of some rallies.

The public meeting attended by Union Defence Minister AK Antony was also largely affected as the turnout was less.

Antony also had to reschedule his journey to Guwahati. He had planned to fly to Guwahati in a chopper but was forced to undertake the journey in a car. As a result he was able to address the gathering for a short duration only since he was in a rush to catch his flight to New Delhi from Guwahati.

On the other hand, BJP Mahila Morch national president Smiti Irani’s scheduled public meeting at Jhalupara, Rynjah and Nongmynsong had to be cancelled though she was in city. Later in the evening, she visited these localities along with the respective BJP candidates and met the general public.
