SHILLONG: A day after the BJP’s organizing secretary for north eastern states, P Chandrashekhar, claimed that the party had an alliance with the NPP and the UDP the State BJP, in a U-turn, denied any such alliance.
BJP state unit general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty on Wednesday said the party does not have any internal alliance with any political party in the State.
“We only want a non Congress Government in Meghalaya,” he said, while admitting that the BJP would have maintained ties with the UDP if the regional party did not have attachment with the Congress.
Stating that the BJP does not have any internal alliance with any party, Chakraborty said his party was willing to support regional parties and even the NPP to form a non-Congress government in the State.
The BJP general secretary also made it clear that his party ‘has a soft understanding with the NPP’ and the BJP had even supported Purno Sangma’s candidature during the Presidential election. The saffron party is fielded 13 candidates for the Assembly election in the State due on Saturday.
On Tuesday, Chandrashekhar had asserted that if both the UDP and the NPP get between 20-22 seats, the BJP would help them form the next government with the help of some Independents.
Meanwhile, the BJP unit of Nartiang on Wednesday appealed to the Chief Electoral Officer to extend the deadline for campaigning for party candidate Veecare Nicia Lamare.
In a request to the CEO, the Nartiang unit stated that the BJP candidate was denied permission many times to campaign in the constituency.
