SHILLONG: The far flung Khliehriat constituency led the way in the turnout of voters for the recently concluded Assembly elections held on Saturday.
The Khliehriat constituency with 40 polling stations recorded the highest turnout in the Assembly elections standing at 93.30 percent. The constituency has 31472 electors out of which 29362 voters turned out to vote in the election.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner A Bhagotia said that the district administration has worked very hard to achieve the results.
He said that the officers of the district including him held discussions with various headmen, church leaders urging them to come out in large numbers to vote.
“We also made public announcements for public to come out in large numbers,” he said.
According to Bhagotia, election materials were distributed among school students to create awareness. “All our Officers jelled and worked well and I congratulate them,” he said.
On the other hand, the North Shillong constituency recorded the lowest turnout of voters in the election.
The constituency witnessed a turnout of 71.45 percent with 38 polling stations. The constituency has 24345 electors out of which 17395 turn out on the polling day.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that in all the urban constituencies the turnout trend is low in comparison to rural areas.
“I cannot contribute any specific reason for the low turnout,” he said while adding that many students studying outside could not come back to the State to vote and this may be a reason for the less turn out in many polling stations this time.
