JOWAI: A fire incident that broke out in Sohkymphor village market in East Jaintia Hills District on Tuesday around 9:30 pm claimed three lives including a woman, her eight-month-old child and her three-year-old niece, who was an orphan.

Sources informed that the victims were identified as Durga Lyngdoh (19), her eight-month-old daughter and her three-year-old niece, Hasina Lyngdoh, who was the daughter of her late elder sister.

Several shops and buildings were gutted in the inferno with losses reported to be worth several lakhs of rupees as per rough estimates.

This is not the first case of a fire incident in Sohkymphor village market. Earlier in 2011 and again in 2012, fire incidents had gutted several shops and other business establishments with losses running into lakhs of rupees.
