SHILLONG: The 2013 Assembly election witnessed the contest of several candidates who are close relatives. However, only a few could make it to the Assembly.

Besides the victory of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, his wife Dikkanchi Shira and Zenith M Sangma (all Congress), Sniawbhalang Dhar and Ngaitlang Dhar (Congress), who are brothers, have also been successfully elected to the next House.

While Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope did not win, his son, David Nongrum made it to the 9th State Legislative Assembly.

Among the Conrad Sangma and James Sangma brothers, only James emerged victorious while Conrad, who is also the Leader of Opposition, failed to make a safe return this time round. Sitting legislator Limison D Sangma returned to the Assembly, while his brother Jimmy D Sangma, who also contested in Garo Hills, failed to win.

Among the brothers who have failed to get elected are sitting legislator Founder Strong Cajee and his sibling Sounder Strong Cajee, Enbin K Raswai and Probin K Raswai. Purno K Sangma and Edmund K Sangma also could not make it to the Assembly.

While the husband-wife duo, Dr Sangma and his wife Shira managed to win, the other husband-wife duo sitting legislator Donkupar Massar and MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri, who were also in fray, failed to make a return.

The only father-daughter duo of Pynshai Manik Syiem and Teilinia Thangkhiew also failed to make the cut.
