SHILLONG: UDP working president and party candidate from West Shillong, Paul Lyngdoh said that the newly elected MLAs of the party would meet soon to decide on the next course of action.
Stating that the party would go for a ‘thorough post mortem’ on the disappointing show in the Assembly elections, Lyngdoh minced no words when he said that the party needed a major revamp.
Reacting to a query on looking to join the Congress-led Government again, he said that the UDP Parliamentary Party would take a call on the same.
“I cannot say whether we would be sitting in the opposition or we would be part of any Government. At the moment anything is possible,” Lyngdoh said after his victory over closest rival, Congress candidate Mohindro Rapsang, by 481 votes on Thursday.
Meanwhile, talking about the dismal performance of the party, another UDP working president Bindo Mathew Lanong said that he never expected the party to draw blank in Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi and Garo Hills.
“We are expecting to win around 15-20 seats as the Congress had to tackle the problems of infighting, rebel candidates etc. in many constituencies. There were strong indications that the Congress would fetch poorly this election. But I am surprised that they managed 29 seats,” Bindo who is also the East Shillong UDP candidate, said.
Nongthymmai UDP candidate Jemino Mawthoh also felt the need for restructuring of the party ranks.
“We have to take corrective measures to ensure the growth and popularity of the party among the masses,” Mawthoh who created an upset by defeating senior Congress leader Charles Pyngrope said. When asked if he would like to see the UDP in opposition or in the Government, he said the party will decide on whatever is best for the people.
