SHILLONG: The Sangma brothers, Conrad and James, were known to be firebrand opposition members, who had made the Government accountable during the past Assembly sessions.
While James returned, his brother Conrad could not make it to the 9th Assembly.
James told reporters on Saturday that the defeat of his brother Conrad was a loss since he had raised many relevant and burning issues concerning the people and the State.
“There was quality leadership when Conrad was the Opposition Leader as it was evident from the debates in the Assembly,” James said on Saturday.
Now the two members of the NPP – James and Nihim D Shira – who are camping in Shillong, have decided to play the role of a constructive Opposition. Though the NPP had fielded 32 candidates, the party could win only two seats from Garo Hills.
While James was elected from Dadenggre, Nihim Shira won from Songsak.
James said that though they are two in number they are looking forward to carry on with the task of being an effective Opposition.
Both James and Nihim assured to take up issues concerning the people of the State.
After getting only a few seats which was below their expectations, the UDP and HSPDP have also decided to sit in the Opposition.
