ESI provisions extended to various classes

SHILLONG: The provisions of the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Act 1948 have been extended to the classes of the establishments in Shillong and the same has been published in the official gazette of Meghalaya on December 13, 2012.

In exercise of the powers conferred by Sub-section (5) of section 1 of the ESI Act 1948, the governor of the State has extended the provisions of the ESI Act to all areas where the scheme has already been brought into force under section 1(3) of the Employees’ State Insurance Act to the classes of establishments wherein 10 or more persons are employed or were employed on any day of the preceding 12 months like shops, hotels, restaurants, road motor transport establishments, cinemas including preview theatres, newspaper establishments as defined in Section 2 (d) of the Working Journalists (condition of service) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1955 (45 of 1955).
