JOWAI: Frequent accidents taking placed in coalmines in Jaintia Hills, particularly in the newly created East Jaintia hills District has claimed many precious lives.
Majority of such cases go unreported and for the first time, officials from the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) visited Jaintia hills District on Tuesday and held a discussion with the West Jaintia Hills District Administration in this regard.
“The meeting discussed the safety of workers in the coalmines”, the Deputy Commissioner, Peter S Dkhar informed.
A decision to hold a one-day work-shop in East Jaintia Hills District was also taken in the meeting where all coalmines owners will be invited.
“We are planning to hold a workshop in a month or two so that mine owners are made aware in regard to safety of their workers employed in their respective coal mines”, Dkhar said.
