‘Non cooperation from victims hinders case perusal’

SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang on Wednesday said that lack of cooperation on the part of the victims of the post poll violence in certain parts of the district especially in Shillong West and Shillong South has hindered the police from booking the accused as per the law.

While confirming that there had been various such cases just after the announcement of poll results, Kharkrang said people hesitate to come forward and report the matter to the police making it hard for them to track down the miscreants.

“We were unable to get to the core of the case following no FIR lodged by the victims in many cases”, Kharkrang said adding that there were also cases where victims would lodge a complaint but withdrew it after an hour.

Stating that lack of cooperation on the part of the victims receiving such of such threats has posed great difficulty for the police, the EKH SP said that it is difficult to pursue the suo motto case against the alleged perpetrators without the co-operation of the victims.

Kharkrang however, said that the case has already been build against the suspects. It is learnt that the so called perpetrators are habitual criminals.

The EKH SP also informed the police are processing the charge sheets against those involved in violating the election commission model code of conduct.

It was leant that maximum of the cases relating to violation of the code of conduct was reported in East Khasi Hills district.
