Recepients for Meghalaya Day award named

SHILLONG: The first Cabinet meeting of the newly formed State Government on Tuesday approved the holding of the Meghalaya Day Awards.

The awards are usually given on Republic Day but it was deferred due to the imposition of the code of conduct for the Assembly election.

Dr Streamlet Dkhar will be awarded the U Tirot Sing Award which is conferred to personalities from the filed of Arts and Culture.

Khasi poet, Dr Streamlet Dkhar, has been felicitated on numerous occasions and she is a professor in the Department of Khasi, NEHU.

This time around, Belbora Wankhar and Col (Retd) Turo Ignatius Donald will be conferred with the Pa Togan Sangma awards for social service.

Belbora Wankhar is the co-ordinator of the Meghalaya Parents’ Association for Disabled besides she is also the National Trust State Coordinator and she was responsible for organizing Badhte Kadam, a campaign by the National Trust under the ministry of social justice and empowerment.

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma told reporters after the Cabinet meeting that the names have been approved after an advisory committee headed by the Chief Secretary WMS Pariat recommended for the names.

According to Sangma, the recipients will be awarded with a citation and one lakh rupees.

The Cabinet also approved the name of Gary Jarman Lamare for U Kiang Nangbah Award who brought laurels to the State by being the first mountaineer from Meghalaya to conquer Mount Everest.
