TURA/ SHILLONG: The Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examination 2013 conducted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) started on Wednesday with 42,081 candidates appearing for the examination throughout the State.

Remarkably, out of the 42,081 candidates appearing for the examination, 22,656 candidates are females and 19,425 are male candidates, which could be a possible indication that the female populace of the State is keener on attaining academic success.

Out of the 42,081 candidates, 18,508 are regular candidates while the remaining 23,573 are private candidates.

SSLC, commonly referred to as the matriculation exam, is considered to be the key to enter the gate of higher studies and also a decision maker as to which stream the students would follow according to their performance.

MBOSE officials informed that they would be carefully monitoring the examination and make sure there are no anomalies or unfair practices.

As is being done every year during the SSLC examination, this year too, MBOSE has appointed observers in various places to monitor the different examination centres.

Also, to avoid any incidents that would get in the way of smooth conduct of the examination, several Magistrates along with the Board’s Officials are working round the clock to ensure a smooth conclusion of the examination.

Sources said that to ensure a fair and unbiased examination, the officials have been provided with transportation for easy and efficient monitoring of the examination centres.

Also, the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations started on Tuesday with a total of 27,238 candidates appearing for the examination across the State.

According to sources, 21,451 candidates from the Arts stream; 3,299 candidates from the Science stream and 2,480 candidates from the Commerce stream are appearing in the examinations.

Arrangements made to prevent traffic chaos

Meanwhile, with a view of easing the tension of the students attending their examination centres in time, new Home Minister Roshan Warjri has directed DGP Prem Singh to prevent traffic jams and ensure smooth flow of traffic especially in the morning hours.

In this connection, the police have prohibited long trailers to pass through the city at night except on Fridays and Saturdays and have also pressed mobile traffic units into service to attend to any traffic jams during exam hours.

To prevent any student from getting stuck in the traffic on the examination day, the traffic police have made sure that there is a smooth flow of traffic along the city streets. Mobile traffic units throughout the night and early in the morning so that any accident and traffic jam on the road can be attended to immediately.

Informing this here on Wednesday, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang informed that extra police personnel are being deployed in the morning and all cranes are being kept on alert to attend to any accident.

“We also urge the public to inform the police control room in case of any traffic jam during the movement of examinees so that we can send the flying squad to immediately clear the jam,” Kharkrang said.

The extra steps have been initiated by the traffic police following traffic chaos in various parts of Shillong on Tuesday in view of the swearing-in of 11 Congress legislators at Raj Bhavan.

Besides the HSSLC and SSLC exams, the final exams of the degree level courses under North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) are also underway in the State.
