NGO to ‘summon’ Karbi Anglong MDC

NONGPOH: Concerned over the extermination of aquatic lives due to indiscriminate blasting of explosives in the rivers along the Meghalaya-Assam border, the KSU has decided to ‘summon’ the MDC of karbi Anglong for deliberations on the matter.

“We will summon Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council (KAADC) MDC Pradeep Rongpi and others for the loss of aquatic lives due to blasting of explosives in the rivers along Assam-Meghalaya border,” the KSU central body environment protection cell, secretary Wanlambok Kharsati told The Shillong Times after submitting a petition to the Ri-Bhoi Additional Deputy Commissioner I Mawlong here on Friday afternoon. He was accompanied by KSU North Khasi Hills District general secretary Vincent Makri.

The KSU will also summon the Ranger, Forest department besides other individuals from Umwang Village who are allegedly involved who are hand in glove with one Rongpi in the ‘drastic acts’.

In the petition, the Union stated that there have been numerous instances where explosives have been used in the rivers causing death to aquatic life by the people of Assam under the direction of Rongpi and forest officials along with some villagers from Umwang.

Raising concern over the destruction of the natural resources, the KSU expressed grave concern over the illegal encroachment by the people of Assam in Ri-Bhoi and West Jaintia Hills.

In its fight to preserve the aquatic lives, the Khasi Student Union, Central Body has also started a “Save Fishes, Save River” campaign in association with the 10-Shnong Jaintia Hills Fish and Environment Protection Unit, Umladang, West Jaintia Hills and the Khasi-Jaintia Border Fish Protection Committee, Thadrang in Ri-Bhoi District.
