SHILLONG: Labour Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Saturday said that the Government will ensure that the recommendations of the State Mining Policy are implemented for the welfare of the labourers working in coal mines across the State.
The Minister’s comment comes in the backdrop of the recent tragedy where three coal labourers were crushed to death in a coal mine in South Garo Hills.
“There is a large mention about labourers’ welfare in the Policy we will zero down on it,” she added.
Coal labourers continue to perish in the coal mines of Meghalaya with many labourers having lost their lives in the ‘deadly’ coal mines across the State in the last one year.
Lyngdoh also informed that she held a meeting with the concerned officers and urged them to ensure that the recommendations of the Mining Policy are implemented in its best spirit for the welfare of the labourers.
“In the meeting I did express my eagerness into looking at the labourers’ welfare schemes with special regards to miner and child labourers,” she added.
According to Lyngdoh, the concerned officers should be sensitized to ensure that the safety and welfare of labourers are looked into as a special focus.
