SHILLONG: Heavy rain and hailstorm damaged around 50 houses at Cham Cham village in East Jaintia Hills on Thursday last.

According to the headman of Cham Cham village P Phawa, the hailstorm which hit the region, affected the lives of many poor people of the village. He also informed that the matter had been intimated to the Gram Sevak to inform the same to the Office of the Khliehriat Block to ensure that help and support is extended to the people of this area.

“We will also approach the local MLA and MDC to do something in this regard, because we cannot sleep under a hole-filled roof which can also put us at risk when such natural calamity hits the area again”, Phawa said.

Meanwhile, the Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF) has urged the District Administration of East Jaintia Hills and the authority of the Khliehriat Block to respond to this call by conducting a spot inspection at the village and other nearby villages to ensure that the needs of the needy people are met.
