SHILLONG: Ostracization of families by village heads seems to have become more frequent in the State and the recent ostracization of a family has been reported from Wahlyngkhat, Pynrusula.

The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) on Monday lodged an FIR with the East Khasi Hills SP regarding an incident where one Jien Khongwet and her family have been ostracized by Dorbar of Wahlyngkha charging them with witchcraft. CSWO President in the FIR said that the incident took place on February 25 and the victim and her family were chased out within 24 hours by the Dorbar. According to Kharshiing, the Dorbar had a meeting on February 25 and asked Jien to leave the village within 24 hours even as the fact remains that they were staying in the village for the past 34 years.

She also alleged that the people of the village even pelted stones at her house.

This is not the first time that a family has been ostracized by the village head as earlier; many families were forced to bear the brunt of ostracization.

Earlier, this month, one Ainusmera Kharnaior had lodged a complaint at Laban police station that three persons – Rikitlang Kharnaior, Stanly Jyrwa and Shaining Star Kharnaior assaulted one Spendri Kharmyndai at Lempluh village, alleging him of practicing witchcraft.

Later, Police arrested two of the accused -Kharnaior and Jyrwa.

“We want action against the culprits so that similar incidents do not occur again,” Kharshiing added.
