SHILLONG: Following the arrest of CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Wednesday demanded the State Government to immediately remove the Access Control System (ACS) installed at the Secretariat.

“The device is useless and a waste of money as it is a mere hindrance for the common people to meet their representatives”, FKJGP president Joe Marwein said.

Commenting on the tight security installed at Secretariat, KSU president Daniel Khyriem said, “The government should device a mechanism which prevents harassment met out to the common people while at the same maintaining the security of the Secretariat.”

On the same note, Maitshaphrang Movement (MSM) Convener Michael Syiem said that the secretariat is meant for the people and if the people are prevented from entering into the office, “Then what is the use of having a people’s office?”

“When it comes to security, the government is bound to do something about it but not in a way to obstruct people from getting their grievances resolved”, Syiem said.

RTI activist Angela Rangad said that it would be interesting to note whether the ACS has really done its job by checking the time management of many officers and staff including the ministers.

“Besides the security aspect of it, it was learnt that this mechanism was installed to check timeliness of the government as well as public servants”, she said adding that it is about time they seek documents of the same to keep track of the discipline being followed inside the four walls of the secretariat.
