Chennai: Chennaiites in all the 200 Wards of the Corporation got a taste of ‘Amma Canteen’s’ signature Re one idlis, Rs five sambar rice and Rs three curd rice, as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa opened 127 more budget canteens on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister inaugurated the canteens located in various parts of the city through video-conferencing from the State Secretariat. Last week, the Corporation completed the process of identifying 127 buildings in these Wards, where the canteens were located. Till Monday, 73 such canteens were functioning. With the addition of another 127 today, the total number of ‘Amma Canteens’, as the budget canteens were christened, in the city went upto 200–one for each ward.

The Chennai City Corporation’s ambitious project was launched last month to provide healthy food at reasonable prices to residents living in slums, daily labourers, drivers, loadmen and migrant workers.

The first canteen was inaugurated by the Chief Minister in February. Over 2,400 women belonging to self-help groups in the city will cook, serve and manage the canteens. (UNI)
