NONGSTOIN: Villagers of Umwali near Langpih in West Khasi Hills faced stiff opposition from the Nepalese residents of the area on Thursday when they tried to construct a pond in a paddy field in the area.

The villagers of Umwali were trying to dig the fish pond that was allotted to them by the fisheries department when Nepalese villagers from nearby areas opposed the construction claiming that the land belonged to them.

An argument was followed by a threat to burn down the JCB digger by the Nepalese villagers.

After a 20-minute argument the Nepalese left even as the Khasi villagers along with the JCB owner Kynsai Kurbah called local MLA KP Pangniang seeking his permission to go ahead with the construction.

After getting a nod from Pangniang, the villagers went ahead with the construction.

The Police Outpost at Langpih was also informed of the incident but till the filing of this report, the police had not reached the scene.
