SHILLONG: More than two months after the attack on Williamnagar jail which resulted in the death of a deputy jailor and a warder, the State Police have replaced the Home Guards in manning the jail premises.
Speaking to The Shillong Times here on Saturday, DG (Prison) Kulbir Krishan said the move has been made under the revised security measures in the jail.
“Meghalaya police have better weapons and manpower and are better equipped to guard the jail,” he said.
Earlier, only the Shillong District Jail was guarded by the State police while the three other district jails were manned by the Home guards.
It may be mentioned that the assistant Jailor Neil Warjri and Warder Sarai Sing Thabah were killed in the attack on the Williamnagar jail by militants on the night of February 2.
According to Krishan, a security audit of the jail has also been done by a special
team, comprising of senior police officers, which will recommend measures for effective security of the jail.
“We will try to implement the recommendations as soon as possible,” Krishan added.
Meanwhile, even after two months of the incident, the State Government has not been able to ascertain the militant outfit responsible for the attack.
Last month, the Single Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya also directed the State Government to submit the status of the inquiry report on the shooting incident at Williamnagar District Jail within four weeks.
