SHILLONG: Maintaining that Meghalaya is one of the conflict areas as far as Northeast India is concerned, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Monday stressed on the need for the government to converge with various institutions to search for solutions to address the problems faced by the State and the region as a whole.
“Through such engagements, we will be able to create enabling solutions to bring about development, peace and harmony in the State”, Dr Sangma said while adding that it is important for the State to harness the benefits of solutions arrived at during various conferences, to address problems like health, poverty and confronting communicable diseases prevalent in Meghalaya. Dr Sangma was speaking at the inauguration of the UN Mock Assembly and United Nations Resource Centre (UNRC), Meghalaya Chapter at the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) here on Monday.
Highlighting the advantages of having the UNRC in Shillong, the Chief Minister said, “This partnership will open up lot of opportunities for our young friends to not only absorb the jobs available in this field but also enrich themselves with human values imparted by the UN.” Dr Sangma had inaugurated the institute of UN studies, Meghalaya Chapter and the United Nations association (Meghalaya), a department of the Indian Federation of United Nations Associations (IFUNA) in Shillong and Tura.
The Chief Minister also assured that the government will provide the required infrastructure in the field to ensure that there is an enabling environment even as he stressed on the need to expand such partnership.
Director of UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan, KM Kerpelman said that UN is trying to reach out to the youth, inform them about the cause taken up by it and seek their views and suggestions on various issues. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by delegates from China, Maldives, Ethiopia, Brazil, USA, Russia, UK and Argentina.
