SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Monday asserted that the State Government will continue to press the Union Government for constitution of the Boundary Commission to solve the long-pending border row with Assam.
The Chief Minister, while replying to the debate on the Governor’s Address, said that the State also needs to think of alternative strategies since Assam has been opposing the idea of constitution of the Boundary Commission.
Earlier, the MUA-I Cabinet had passed a resolution urging the Central Government to constitute a Boundary Commission which was opposed by the Assam Assembly.
According to Dr Sangma, the State, on its part, has done extensive diligence and marshalled documentary materials to buttress the State’s claims over the twelve areas of difference.
While stating that the materials have been presented to the Assam government, Dr Sangma said that the committee of the two chief secretaries will carry forward their dialogues.
“They are meeting at regular intervals and this has helped in creating a better understanding on both sides,” he said.
He also said that the matter is being pursued with both the Central and Assam Government.
“We all need to work towards building up a favorable political climate in both the states by taking all shades of political and public opinion on board,” Dr Sangma said.
While starting that the issue of Block 1 and II has been confronting the State since 1951, Dr Sangma said that the Government is committed to work with utmost sense of responsibility towards exploring a mutually acceptable solution to the boundary dispute.
